Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such drugs must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
